Trish | Person Centred Counsellor

Person Centred Counselling Darley Dale - Matlock

Are you unsure where to begin with everything feeling totally overwhelming? I am here to help you feel supported, to find your own path to your own dreams, whilst untangling the barriers in your way. Allowing you to be comfortable to be you.

I am passionate about being a human on a level with all clients, I do not hold a magic wand nor the power. Our sessions are to allow you a space to truly be an unfiltered you, where you will not be judged to allow you the space to understand yourself fully and your needs.

Through this awareness getting your needs met becomes much easier and we can begin to breakdown barriers that may have stood in the way up until now within your life. We will do this by building a strong foundation within our relationship, reaching a point where relational depth gives you the confidence to bring your biggest vulnerabilities to the sessions. Relational depth is a deep level of understanding and developed by you feeling heard, understood and not judged.

Life is often complex like an elastic band ball, where one layer needs to be removed at a time to be able to free the client to be who they want to be. This is the work I really thrive within with no time limits allowing the work to happen at a clients pace. Therapy can feel difficult at times but I am here to sit in the darkness with you so that you do not feel alone and to help guide you towards the light in your own life.

Often we overlook how much our lives are forever changing, maybe seeing ourselves as caterpillars that turn into butterflies once you become an adult. Whilst this may be how it feels for some, others may experience feeling more like a tree. They start life as a sapling being shaped by their nature and surroundings similar to humans, but as the seasons change and as they mature the changes happen frequently, bad weather can result in differences year on year, and each season brings differences too.

This feeling of things forever changing can often result in anxiety, feeling overwhelmed and like things are completely out of your control.

Neurodiversity

Now thinking about your life, have you experienced something similar such as a new diagnosis opening your eyes to a new reality that you need some support working out how you move forwards?

Life experience and training have provided me with the skills to work with those that are neurodivergent (ADD / ADHD, autism spectrum) and caregivers/loved ones of someone who is neurodivergent. An understanding of the complexities that occur on a daily basis help me to be able to slow the pace down within sessions to reduce burnout in clients.

Sometimes taking sessions in a creative direction or being very black and white when reflecting what I hear, to check both my own and the clients understanding of their situation. Whilst I may have experience in this area it is crucial to point out all clients are unique and I will adapt sessions where needed to meet these unique needs.

Support for men

I also work with young men, a generation that is becoming more aware that they too, have emotions, feelings and needs that previously may have been told things such as 'big boys don't cry'. Challenging these stereotypes within sessions to allow clients to truly express what is going on for them in a non judgmental environment to understand themselves potentially for the first time. We will work together to explore how you, the client can feel comfortable sitting with these emotions as part of the counselling journey.

Other issues

Further to this I have experience with bereavement, chronic illness, anxiety, parenthood, and trauma.

Rewind therapy is also part of my practice which is aimed at those with PTSD, Phobias, Anxiety or OCD. This is a non disclosure therapy which means clients can do the work without retelling the trauma to someone. This can be done as stand alone work or can be built in with other counselling sessions booked in around this. Rewind can be only be done as a double session (100 minutes), with one follow up session 2 weeks later. For some complex traumas it can take up to 6 sessions.

Reaching out can be the toughest step for many and it can often be about timing. Therefore please send me a message using the contact button, to allow 24 hours each day for you to reach out. I will respond as soon as I can usually within 7 days.

Online therapy

An online session will involve me sending you a google meet link each week, this is a video platform. However it is also possible to just receive a telephone call if you would prefer, for some this is the prefered option.

Qualifications and registrations

I have completed a variety of training and CPD (continuous professional development) courses which include:

  • Level 5 Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy
  • Rewind Therapy
  • Walk and Talk Therapy
  • Bereaved by suicide training
  • Bereavement training

  • Working therapeutically with ASD and ADHD
  • Taming the inner critic with self compassion
  • Autism level 2
  • Children and young people's mental health level 2
  • Working with Shame

  • Adult and Children's Safeguarding training
  • First aid training
  • Domestic Abuse training
  • Working with relational trauma
  • Introduction to Body Image and Disordered Eating

Training for me is important as it prevents me from becoming stagnant and helps to open my eyes to many more experiences than my own. Whilst I have a wealth of personal and work experience each client is totally unique and the key to it all is our connection within the therapy space. Most important is that you feel safe and heard without judgement.

I have a Level 5 Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy which led me into person centred therapy as my area of focus. Some clients may wonder if Person Centred Counselling is just someone sitting and listening. However, for me it is about hearing a person and understanding or recognising things they are saying but may not notice or be fully aware of themselves.

Further to this by the counsellor being curious about topics a client avoids it can help them to discover parts of their life or personality they may have never explored before. Being Person Centred keeps the client as the focus not others in their life and can really help the client gain clarity about themselves, their coping mechanisms, behaviours and emotions.
