Psychotherapy Alton

I am a neurodivergent (AuDHD) therapist who was late diagnosed. This has given me lived experience of living in a world that doesn't always fit how I think, feel and process, and of learning how to drop my masks and bring my authentic self.

I have always been interested in people, what makes them tick, and looking at our differences. Having been brought up in a very judgemental household, I learned very early in life to accept others for who they are and to embrace all our quirks.

I often stand out as being different from others, and learning about my neurodiversity brought me so much understanding and acceptance of myself. Supporting others to understand and accept themselves is such a wonderful part of my work as a counsellor, and I feel very privileged to be in a position to offer this.

Most of my clients are neurodivergent and looking to work out how to adjust to this, or to see what changes can be made in order for life and the world to be a happier, safer feeling place. Whether you are diagnosed, awating assessment or early in your journey of discovery, I am here to support you in this.

We will work together to find out which are your most difficult areas of life, and see what strategies might be of help. Much of this will include learning to accept yourself, as you are, and to begin to be unapologetically you.

I offer a very human approach, and will sometimes draw on my own experiences to help you understand your own. It is my belief that the therapy process works much better when we can both be human together.

I offer a free initial conversation to give you a chance to decide if I might be the right therapist for you. You are under no obligation following this, and I encourage you to "interview" as many therapists as you need to until you find the right one for you.

Specialisations and Expertises

Being neurodivergent myself, this is the core of my work. I feel that being neurodivergent allows me to communicate and work more efectively with others who are also neurodivergent.

I do not try to estimate how many sessions will be needed, and this is very much decided by you. It is common for other difficulties to become apparent once the work has started, then it will be for you to choose if you want to dig into these or not. I will follow your lead in sessions, and we will check in from time to time to ensure you are still benefitting from therapy.

Most common issues I support people with:

Most of my work is related to neurodivergency, and with the many difficulties that comes with this. This can include, and not restricted to:

Recognising and healing shame. We seem to pick up a lot of unneeded shame through our lives, and we can look at whether this is actually relevant, or if we can reframe it to stop beating rourself up for things that were not your fault.

Looking at what could be neurodivergent traits versus "normal" thoughts and feelings. It is common for traits to be ignored or unrecognised due to an assumption that "everyone" does that. Looking at the differences help to accept and understand yourself better.

Acceptance of neurodivergent traits and moving towards you feeling ok. There is still a lot of misunderstanding and stigma aorund Autism, ADHD etc, which can make it hard to feel it is ok. We will work towards you knowing you are good enough and that you do not need to mask and over-adapt to feel and be ok in this world.

Communication and relationships. Sometimes we tend to miss certain aspects of communication, especially that which is inauthentic and a bit ambiguous. We can look at how to make this easier which can have an impact on your relationships and how you relate to others.

PTSD and similar difficulties. If appropriate, we can look at using the Rewind Technique. This is a great technique which can help soothe and minimise the effects of PTSD. This is also used for phobias and can greatly reduce fears.
