(Online) Integrative Counselling Godalming

No matter how much you love your children being a parent comes with all sorts of challenges. Whatever their age, kids are great at testing your patience, challenging your boundaries and really know how to knock your self-esteem.  There's a myth that parenting is meant to be a natural and beautiful skill that we just know how to do, its rare for anyone to get it right all the time. If you're feeling like its going wrong more than its going right, you might be feeling guilty and afraid to tell your friends in case they judge you. You're constantly giving but the demands keep coming and now you're feeling resentful because it never seems to be enough. You feel like its all on you with no way out and the weight of the mental load is overwhelming.

Being parented is something we all have in common, but it isn’t always the warm loving experience we deserved. Being parented may have been a traumatic experience for you having been held to impossibly high expectations, criticised, rejected or abandoned. Now whenever you see your parents its more pain than pleasure and you don't know how to protect yourself from their hurtful ways. This might have left you struggling with low self-esteem, wanting to make everyone happy but not feeling it yourself. As an adult you may be isolated unable to trust in the care of others and being alone is so much easier to tolerate than the fear of being abandoned. You might be battling with anxiety or depression and don't know how to change it.

Whether you’re the parent or the parented, challenges in this fundamental relationship can have profound impacts on how we experience ourselves and the world around us. If we don’t feel connected to the most important people in our lives it can lead to feelings of failure, guilt or a loss of trust in ourself and others. It doesn’t have to be this way, you deserve to feel confident, calm and enjoy your relationships.

About me

Whether you’re an overwhelmed parent or have a difficult relationship with your parents, I can support you to get back in touch with yourself, identify and communicate your boundaries, overcome anxiety, let go of guilt and resentment, so you can have a happier, healthier relationship with your children and or parents.

Specialisations and Expertises

Anxiety - I work with you to develop an understanding of why you feel anxious and what to do about it. I'll give you lots of tools to use to enable you to take control of your life with confidence.

Parenting - I can help you fall back in love with your kids and your family, develop new ways of communicating with your partner so you can share the mental load so you can feel balanced, calm and yourself again.

Most common issues I support people with:

Parenting Challenges - The weight of the mental load is taking its toll, you're carryng it all on your own with no support. You're exhausted, resentful and have lost touch with who you used to be. I can help you to find ways lightening the load so you can feel calm, supported and fall back in love with yourself, your partner and being a parent.

Caring for Parents - You struggle with conflict, anxiety and low self-esteem. Your relationships feel one sided and you either don't want to bother or try to keep the peace and make everyone happy. Your parents werent who you needed as a achild and maybe that hasn't changed as an adult either. But you don't have to keep living their version of you. I can help you find confidence, overcome anxiety and build safe and meaningful relationships.

Postnatal mental health and wellbeing - While you were pregnant you dreamed about what it would be like to hold your baby for the first time, what they'd look like how you'd tell people. Whether your birth went to plan or not it wasn't what you'd expected and you've been left feeling scared or disapointed. You didn't instantly fall in love with your baby like you were told you would and it feels like the moment was stolen from you. Baby is home and you're sleep deprived, you and your partner are arguing and your anxious about little ones feeing and sleep. You're overwhelmed and everthing is so far from what you wanted it to be. You're not alone, this is an incrdibly difficult time and there are so many beautiful lies about what it "should" be like. I can support you to greive the birth you didn't get to have, manage anxiety about baby and breastfeeding and help you find healthier ways of communicating with your partner. I can help you to feel confident, calm and connected in this new stage of your life.

Recovering from being parented - Your house didn't feel like your safe place when you were little, you were often punished for how you felt, the way you behaved and eiither shouted at or given the silent treatment. the way you speak to yourself is riddle with criticism and your confidence is non-existent. Your needs get let at the bottom of the pile, because other people are more important. You're exahusted, anxious and resentful that the people around you can't see how much your struggling.
