Jo | Person Centred Counsellor
Counselling Didsbury - Manchester
Hi and a warm welcome to my page. My name is Jo and I work with people who struggle with low self-esteem, anxiety and negative thinking.
You have probably clicked here because you are going through a difficult time or have certain things in your life that are troubling you? I’m a qualified counsellor based in Didsbury and I help people who struggle with low self-esteem, anxiety and negative thinking to realise their worth and live a more authentic life.
As a recovering people pleaser and anxiety disorder sufferer, I know how debilitating self doubt and not feeling good enough at our core can feel. And how it can destroy our confidence in all areas of our life. I've been there. And I know through my own personal journey just how powerful counselling can be.
Do you...
- Constantly overthink, criticise yourself and compare yourself to others?
- Live in a constant state of negativity and overwhelm - never feeling good enough no matter how many compliments others pay you or how well you are doing?
- Pretend everything is 'fine' on the outside, but underneath you're racked with anxiety and self doubt?
- Beat yourself up constantly and set impossibly high standards for yourself?
- Struggle with a challenging relationship with a critical parent or significant other?
- Try to please others and worry constantly what people think of you?
Would you like to feel...
Liberated - from the negativity and self doubt that's 'running the show' in your mind.
Insightful - you finally have insight as to why you've been feeling and behaving the way uou do.
Empowered - you now understand how and why your anxiety and negative thoughts are triggered and have coping tools to manage them so they no longer overwhelm you.
Calm - You can now relax and sleep better at night rather than replaying conversations over and over in your head.
Inspired - you realise for the first time your feelings are valid, you have needs and have learned how to get them met
Excited - you feel more confident to try new things and make changes in your life that you never thought possible
Through counselling, you will be welcomed and accepted exactly as you are in a safe space away from judgements or advice from others. You will gain self awareness and coping tools, empowering you to calm your mind of negative chatter.
If any of this sounds familiar and you’re tired of ‘putting on a brave face’, then I may be the counsellor for you. Please contact me for a free, no obligation 15 minute chat so we can see how I could help you.
Please reach out - It's OK to not be OK. And I'd love to help.
Warm wishes
Jo
Online therapy
I am qualified in person-centred counselling and I am a registered member of the National Counselling Society, adhering to its ethical framework for good practice.
I am also a certified counsellor in online and telephone counselling (copies of qualifications available on request).
What is online counselling?
Online counselling is a way for you to engage in counselling using internet technology (I use Zoom) from your home or other private space. It takes place within a secure, encrypted environment to offer you confidentiality and safety.
It is a way for you to see your counsellor face to face from your computer whilst engaging in therapy. You will be guided through setting up your own encrypted Zoom account and we will meet on Zoom at a time that we have previously arranged. Sessions are 55 minutes in length.
Being able to see your counsellor gives you more of the benefits you get from face-to-face counselling but with the convenience of online therapy. By talking, you hear tone of voice and you see non-verbal communications such as facial expressions.
If you wish you can choose to only work with audio through Zoom and no video camera would then be needed. Alternatively, you can hide your image so it is only the counsellor that you see on screen (please ask if you are unaware of this option).
Online counselling offers certain benefits but there are also limitations that are worth bearing in mind :
Benefits
- Counselling therapy from your own home or private space
- Secure inscription software offers confidentiality and peace of mind
- No chance that you may be seen entering the counsellor’s practice
- Therapy at a time, place and pace that suits you
- No travelling
- Opportunity to work with a counsellor outside of your region (even country) and with specialist training if required
Things to consider
- Are you comfortable using internet technology?
- Do you feel your situation is too complex to discuss via the internet or telephone?
- Is there a computer terminal that you can use privately without interruption?
- Do you have a private room or space where you can engage in counselling with no interruptions or others being able to hear (confidentiality)?
- With telephone counselling, there are no nonverbal cues or body language for you or the counsellor to read, which may lead to misunderstanding.

Specialisations
I have a special interest in working with people struggling with low self esteem, anxiety and negative thinking. Most of my clients struggle with a particulay harsh 'inner critic' and are full of self doubt, stuck in negative thought patterns, perfectionists, people pleasers who struggle to say no to others, those who find it hard to set boundaries and people who tend to put on a brave face to the outside world whilst feeling very different inside.
The heart of my work is person-centred which means I don't advise or tell you what to do. My aim is to be alongside you on your journey and in your struggles offering support and insights and education as to why you are probably feeling the way you do.
I also offer numerous suggestions and tried and tested techniques to help you manage on a day to day basis - but being very mindful that what works for one client may not work for you so it is a case of trying out various tools until you find a combination that works best and uniquely for you.
Ultimately I am passionate about empowering you to make your own decisions, realise your worth and live a life that feels authentic to you. I also bring self compassion and mindfulness into the work as being kind to ourselves is not something that comes easily to those of us who dont tend to feel good enough.
Most of my clients tend to work longer term (12 sessions plus) on a weekly basis to start with. However it is your choice as to what works best for you and we can discuss that when we first speak. I am very flexible in how the sessions work - often clients move onto fortnighly and montly sessions once they start to feel better and see changes. Some clients have busy schedules or work shifts and in this case I can offer ad hoc sessions.
I offer a free of charge introductory call where we can discuss your individual circumstances and come up with a session schedule that will work best for you.

- Low Self esteem
- Anxiety
- Negative thinking and inner critic
- Depression
- Infertility
