Rachel | Integrative Counsellor

Counselling Leeds

Welcome! I am a Relate trained counsellor experienced at working with both couples and individuals.
I offer a down-to-earth, forward thinking, non-directive approach. I endeavour to create a warm, non-judgemental therapeutic relationship where we can focus on you and your situation. I will work with you to find an understanding of your concerns, your deeper needs and how they are affecting your relationships.

Many people bring past expectations and experiences into their present relationships and this may lead to feelings of being misunderstood, unheard and of loneliness. You might need to find a new balance after a time of crisis, or perhaps rekindle the spark in a good relationship that no longer feels quite right. You might be aware of repeating arguments and a sense of “here we go again” with no resolution, or beginning to see repeating patterns emerge but not be sure how to change. These are just a few of the many reasons people decide to seek counselling.

As an individual or a couple whether feeling something is "just a bit off" or dealing with a crisis, this an opportunity to gain insight into yourself and others. Counselling provides a safe environment to discover new perspectives, access inner resources and have the confidence to address change.

I have worked with a wide range of problems including communication difficulties, anxiety, depression, divorce, affairs, self esteem,  grief, issues of trust, difficulties with the wider family, cultural differences, and changes in the relationship such as a new baby, illness, retirement and many more. I have worked with clients from the LGBT community and from diverse backgrounds.

Some clients feel “stuck”. Sometimes talking with someone who is not involved in your day to day life, and outside of all work and family relationships gives a freedom to see life from a different perspective and explore other options. Exploring relationships with others but also with ourselves can provide a feeling of empowerment  and confidence.

Online therapy

I trained in online therapy while still working at Relate and found clients liked the ability to work from different places and fit sessions into the working day . This was espescially true in couples therapy where both often found it much easier if needed to link into zoom from 2 different places. Some found it beneficial to have some time after the session apart to process and reflect on what had been heard and found this way of working suited them well.

During Covid this became the only way of working and I found so many clients, old and new ,long term and short term preferred this way of working so I now work soley online.

Most clients have an initial session which gives a chance to go into more detail about what they are dealing with and also see that they feel comfortable working with me. After that, they can decide what would be most helpful ongoing and can either book weekly sessions or work around family/work commitments.

Obviously it is not for all but well worth having an initial session to see how you feel.

Specialisations

I enjoy working with a wide range of clients, individuals and couples and feel priviledged to share in your time to reflect on whatever it is that has brought you to counselling. I have worked with many clients at a where an outside view of a situation can help give a wider perspective to an issue.

Communication, affairs, issues with wider family members, unease with the day to day, anxiety at work are all areas I work with often but much more it is the particular person in their particular circumstances and how to support change and ease that I focus on.

After the initial session many clients choose to come weekly for 6/8 sessions and then decide whether to continue weekly or some change to fortnightly or monthly. I leave that for us to discuss and you to decide as the sessions happen.

Most common issues I support people with:

I have supported couples and individuals with a wide range of issues including times of change whether divorce, death, new baby, retirement, affairs, anxiety, breakup and regaining confidence and feeling stuck, disconnected or lonely in the relationship. Many of these issues result in communication breaking down and a lack of understanding and a feeling of disconnect.

I help to look underneath the presenting issue to the processes underneath and discover new ways of relating that feel more connecting and productive. It is often in the unpicking of the stories and meanings that have been created that new understandings and confidence are found.

This can be true whether working as a couple or as an individual. It is often the relationship with ourselves and understanding that which allows us to speak and hear more compassionately to ourselves and others.
