How My Online Counselling and Psychotherapy Therapy Works: Using Zoom

Initial Contact and Consultation

  • Step 1: Initial Inquiry
    • Potential clients reach out via the contact form on my profile.
    • I respond promptly to set up an initial consultation, addressing any immediate questions or concerns.
  • Step 2: Initial Consultation
    • A brief, free consultation session is scheduled via Zoom to discuss the client's needs, goals, and to assess compatibility.
    • During this session, I explain my therapeutic approach, confidentiality policies, and answer any questions about the process.

Scheduling and Payment

  • Step 3: Session Scheduling
    • Once the client decides to proceed, we schedule regular sessions based on mutual availability.
    • Sessions are typically 50 minutes long and can be scheduled weekly or bi-weekly, depending on the client's needs.
    • The first paid session is an assessment of needs and involves questionnaires and then scheduling of appointments.
  • Step 4: Payment Arrangement
    • Payment methods are discussed and agreed upon. Clients  pay via secure online payment systems a month in advance or 4 block sessions

Preparing for the Session

  • Step 5: Setting Up Zoom
    • Clients receive a Zoom link via email for their scheduled sessions. This link is unique to each session and is sent out 24 hours in advance.
    • Clients are encouraged to test their Zoom setup beforehand to ensure a smooth connection, including checking their internet connection, webcam, and microphone.
  • Step 6: Creating a Private Space
    • Clients are advised to find a quiet, private space where they feel comfortable speaking freely without interruptions.

Conducting the Session

  • Step 7: Starting the Session
    • At the scheduled time, clients click on the Zoom link and join the session.
    • I greet the client and ensure they are comfortable before starting the therapeutic work.
  • Step 8: Therapeutic Process
    • The session begins with a brief check-in, followed by a focus on the client's current concerns or ongoing therapeutic goals.
    • My approach is empathetic and non-judgmental, facilitating a safe environment for clients to explore their emotions and experiences.
    • Techniques and interventions are tailored to the client's needs, often including discussing adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and their impact.

Post-Session and Follow-Up

  • Step 9: Post-Session Reflection
    • At the end of the session, we briefly review what was discussed and set goals or tasks for the next session.
    • Clients are encouraged to reflect on the session and note any thoughts or feelings that arise between sessions.
  • Step 10: Follow-Up Communication
    • I provide additional resources or follow-up communication if necessary, such as reading materials or coping strategies.
    • Clients can reach out via email for support or to reschedule sessions if needed.

Confidentiality and Privacy

  • Step 11: Maintaining Confidentiality
    • All sessions are conducted with strict confidentiality, adhering to ethical standards and privacy laws.
    • Zoom sessions are encrypted to ensure client privacy, and no sessions are recorded without explicit consent.

Continuous Evaluation

  • Step 12: Ongoing Assessment
    • Throughout the therapeutic process, we regularly evaluate progress and adjust the approach as needed to ensure it aligns with the client's evolving goals.
    • Feedback from clients is welcomed and integrated to improve the therapeutic experience.

By utilizing Zoom for online counselling and psychotherapy, I strive to make therapy accessible, flexible, and effective, providing a compassionate and supportive environment for clients to work through their challenges and achieve their mental health goals.

I specialize in the treatment of
Adverse Childhood Experiences ACEs and trauma, including issues of abuse, bullying, domestic violence, along with divorce, self-esteem, anxiety, and stress.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) refer to potentially traumatic events that occur in childhood (ages 0-17). These experiences can have profound effects on a person's mental, emotional, and physical health throughout their adult life. Understanding and addressing ACEs is crucial for promoting healing, resilience, and overall well-being.

Common Types of ACEs people suffer from, which I support include the following:

1. Abuse

  • Physical Abuse
  • Emotional Abuse: Actions or verbal statements that cause emotional harm or distress.
  • Sexual Abuse: Any sexual activity with a child, including molestation, rape, and exploitation.

2. Neglect

  • Physical Neglect: Failure to provide necessary food, shelter, or supervision.
  • Emotional Neglect: Failure to meet a child’s emotional needs, including affection, attention, and support.

3. Household Challenges

  • Substance Abuse: Living with a family member who has a substance use disorder.
  • Mental Illness: Living with a family member who has mental health issues.
  • Domestic Violence: Witnessing domestic violence or experiencing violence in the home.
  • Incarceration of a Household Member: Having a family member who is incarcerated.
  • Parental Separation or Divorce: Experiencing the separation or divorce of parents.
  • Impact of ACEs on Mental Health

4. Psychological Effects

  • Anxiety and Depression: Higher risk of developing anxiety and depression due to unresolved trauma.
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Symptoms resulting from chronic or severe traumatic experiences.
  • Low Self-Esteem: Feelings of worthlessness or inadequacy stemming from childhood experiences.

5. Behavioral Effects

  • Risky Behaviors: Increased likelihood of engaging in substance abuse, self-harm, or other risky behaviors as coping mechanisms.
  • Difficulty in Relationships: Challenges in forming and maintaining healthy relationships due to trust issues or fear of intimacy.

6. Physical Health Effects

  • Chronic Health Conditions: Higher risk for conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity due to prolonged stress and unhealthy coping mechanisms.
  • Poor Health Habits: Increased likelihood of smoking, poor diet, and lack of exercise.

How I address the therapy for my clients:

1. Creating a Safe Space

  • Empathy and Non-Judgment: Providing a compassionate, non-judgmental environment where clients feel safe to share their experiences.
  • Building Trust: Establishing a trusting relationship to encourage open and honest communication.

2. Using a Trauma-Informed Approach

  • Understanding Trauma Responses: Recognizing the ways in which trauma impacts behavior and mental health.
  • Empowering Clients: Helping clients regain control and empowerment in their lives.

3. Tailored Interventions

  • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Addressing negative thought patterns and behaviors resulting from ACEs.
  • Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Teaching clients coping strategies to manage stress and anxiety.

4. Supporting Resilience and Healing

  • Strengths-Based Approach: Focusing on clients’ strengths and resources to foster resilience.
  • Developing Coping Skills: Helping clients develop healthy coping mechanisms and problem-solving skills.
  • Building a Support Network: Encouraging the development of a strong support system, including friends, family, and community resources.

By providing a safe, supportive environment and utilizing trauma-informed approaches, my therapy can help individuals process their past experiences and build a healthier, more fulfilling future.
