Counselling Washington - Tyne and Wear

Taking the first step in seeking support when life seems overwhelming can be nerve-wracking. Trusting a stranger with your life story, your 'self', can feel scary and a step into the unknown. However, once taken, the relief can feel like a weight lifted from your shoulders.

Understanding how daunting the experience can be, I will offer you the space to tell your story as you wish to and at a pace which suits you. I will offer you my full attention as we work together to unpick aspects of your life which trouble you and seek a better outcome. I will offer you the support you need to feel heard and understood, remaining non-judgemental, you are after all the expert in your own life.

I offer remote/online therapy via Zoom, Teams, WhatsApp, email and telephone call which many clients prefer for various reasons. Sometimes being in your own comfortable and familiar space can seem less formidable than travelling to and entering the unknown. Our sessions will remain confidential and clients tell me none of the relationship experience is lost by working together in this way.

I look forward to meeting new clients of all ages and with a wide range of issues including but not restricted to anxiety, depression, bereavement, stress, menopause, relationships, stillbirth, for example. Life can painful, confusing and downright tough, we all need a hand at times and if this is your time, I am here.

Online therapy

I use various media in online therapy, Zoom, Teams, WhatsApp, FaceTime, whichever my client prefers. I am often asked to use email and some clients prefer to take telephone calls only.

At present, I am working solely online.

Qualifications and registrations

I am a member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists, having registered my practice over a decade ago. I am a member of two specialist divisions within BACP, those being Children and Young Persons and Spirituality in Counselling.

I graduated with a BA Hons (First Class) degree in Counselling, having first completed a Foundation Degree in Counselling.

I continue to enhance myself and my practice, both professionally and personally, through accredted courses run by various mental health organisations across a broad spectrum of modalities.

I am finding more and more clients are struggling with existential crisis, or seeking meaning in life, I believe the recent pandemic has had an effect on most of us to some extent, for many this has led to anxiety over where we are in life and the tenuous thread between life and death. This whole area holds a lot of interest for me and is one I have researched extensively.
Linked with the above, has been a rise in clients seeking help with issues of spiritual uncertainty, in essence a crisis of faith...or a lack of. Once again, although not following any particular religion, I am very interested in the subject and have researched extensively on what it means to have faith only to  lose it or to feel an emptiness in it's place. If either of these issues resonate with you, please get in touch.

I would recommend an initial block of six sessions in both instances, to enable us to make headway, whilst leaving open the path to extending where necessary.

Most common issues I support people with:

Most issues my clients bring to me involve unresolved past trauma leading to problems in the present. It can be easy to gloss over incidents which occurred in childhood, viewing them as the same type of things which happened to lots of friends, i.e. parental divorce, moving schools frequently, etc. Sometimes we have to unpick the past to explain the present to be able to move on to the future.

Anxiety and depression are issues which are frequently brought to the table. Anxiety can be viewed as generalised, as in a real feeling of uncertainty and unease in most areas of life, or within a particular area such as socialising, workplace anxiety, relationship problems, etc. Talking it through can bring a sense a release and the support I offer can lighten the load.
Depression often carries a dogged feeling of never-ending struggle and a sense of hopelessness. Working through your personal experience of depression, I can help you manage the negative thoughts and incorporate good self-care practice into your daily routine.

Relationship problems are frequently being brought to counselling by clients, more so since the COVID pandemic but now exacerbated by the recent financial crisis. The unique to you issues which have occurred within your relationship/relationships will be received by me in a non-judgemental way, my understanding of the challenges we all face in these uncertain times. I can help you create boundaries to strengthen and validate your position, whilst developing strategies for positive and mutual change.
